Solar technology investments promise
bright future

The world's top two polysilicon manufacturers will make billion-dollar investments to build new plants in Tennessee that will serve the needs of the emerging solar technology industry. Polysilicon is used in solar cells as well as semiconductor devices.

imageDow Corning-Hemlock Semiconductor will build a plant at the Commerce Park Megasite in Clarksville. The $1.2 billion investment is expected to bring over 500 initial direct jobs. And a German company, Wacker Chemie AG, expects to make a $1 billion investment in Charleston (near Cleveland), in Bradley County, for its polysilicon plant. It is expected to provide about 500 jobs in its first phase of operations.

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen said landing the plants is an important step in making Tennessee a leader in environmental technology and in helping the nation move toward prosperity and leadership in solar energy. A press release from Wacker said its decision was based on “the size of the site, availability of reliable power from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), over-the-fence supply of chlorine from the adjacent Olin Corporation facility, and excellent transportation infrastructure.”

Competitive prices and world-class reliability

top 100TVA power is a big plus for companies in the Tennessee Valley. The agency’s electric rates remain competitively priced, and TVA and its power distributors have achieved an exceptional record of reliability. The TVA transmission system has achieved 99.999% reliability every year since 2000, and the system ranks in the top 10% of all U.S. utilities. The North American Electric Reliability Corporation has praised TVA’s culture of reliability. TVA is also working to ensure that it has the capacity needed to meet the Valley’s growing power demands. One important measure was restarting the first nuclear generating unit to go online in this century at Browns Ferry, Alabama.
