Confluence Solar CEO recognizes
the power of teamwork

confluence solarConfluence Solar, a manufacturer of high-quality single crystal silicon for the solar photovoltaic industry, recently announced that it will build a $200 million facility in Clinton, Tenn. The plant will manufacture products that help make solar photovoltaic cells more efficient. In making this location decision, both power reliability and partnership collaborations were important factors. Confluence Solar was impressed with TVA’s 99.999% reliability for 10 years in a row, and also liked the fact that all partners in the project were brought together as a team right from the start. “It was evident that there’s a communication process and a clear strategy, not just at the regional and state level, but also in the communities,” said Tom Cadwell, CEO of Confluence Solar. “Clinton’s close proximity to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the new Solar Institute also made Tennessee a perfect location for our facility.”

TVA partners in building
solar charging system

TVA, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have announced that they will test and deploy a system of solar-assisted charging stations for electric vehicles across the state of Tennessee.

“These new cars will need a new type of ‘filling station,’ said TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore, “and we’ve been working with our partners at Nissan, the state of Tennessee, the city of Knoxville, EPRI, ORNL, Knoxville Utilities Board, and other utilities to create these filling stations for the future.”

The solar assist will offset any negative effects on the power system from charging vehicles during periods of peak electricity demand. While the vehicles are charging, the stationary batteries and smart grid controls will provide additional localized support to the system.
