Mitsubishi announces new transformer plant in Memphis
February 14, 2011 – Mitsubishi Electric Power Products, a high-capacity electric transformer manufacturer, recently announced plans to open a $200-million, 350,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Memphis, Tenn.
The facility, which at full production will employ 275 workers, will represent the largest domestic investment ever by the Japanese-owned company. The plant initially will produce extra-high voltage shell type power transformers.
Plant operations also will require numerous local suppliers of machine and fabricated materials, as well as other products and services.
The shell type power transformers manufactured in the new facility are expected to play an important role in the development of stable and reliable electric grids in North America.
Economic development partners on the project included Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division; the city of Memphis; Shelby County; the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce; the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development; and TVA.
