Electrolux announces major Memphis plant
Dec. 15, 2010 – Electrolux, the global home appliance manufacturer based in Sweden, has announced plans to open a major manufacturing plant in Memphis, Tenn.
Electrolux is a $14 billion company, named one of the top five global companies in consumer durables by Forbes. It will create more than 1,200 direct jobs with above-average wages when the plant is fully operational. The project represents a capital invesment of approximately $190 million.
The company is a global leader in appliances for the home and professional use, selling 40 million products to customers in more than 150 countries every year. Besides the direct jobs, the move could potentially create 2,000-plus additional jobs at suppliers and support businesses throughout the region.
The 700,000-square-foot plant will be located at the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park in southwest Memphis. Major cooking appliances in the Electrolux and Frigidaire product lines will be built at the site in a facility constructed to LEED-certification standards.
Gov. Phil Bredesen joined state and local officials to make the Electrolux announcement in Memphis. Partners in the project include Memphis Light, Gas & Water Division; the Greater Memphis Chamber; the City of Memphis; Shelby County; the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development; and TVA.
