Unilever will expand Tennessee plant
Oct. 6, 2009 – Consumer goods manufacturer Unilever has announced that it will expand its production plant in Covington, Tennessee, northeast of Memphis. The expansion will generate an investment of $100 million and add approximately 275 jobs.
"This is great news for Unilever and the state of Tennessee,” Governor Phil Bredesen said. “These new jobs are the result of a strong partnership between the state and the local community."
The Covington facility currently produces Slim-Fast® and will add ice cream and frozen novelties, including products under the Breyers, Klondike, and Popsicle brands. Construction is set to begin in early 2010.
“This expansion project is a great example of what can be accomplished when there is collaboration and cooperation among those on the state and local levels, including our local power provider Covington Electric System,” said John Bradley, TVA's senior vice president of economic development. “We are proud to support existing industry and will continue to work with Unilever as they grow in the Covington community.”
Unilever makes products for hygiene, personal care, and nutrition. Its other brands include Hellmann's, Lipton, Q-Tips, and Vaseline.
