Mississippi industrial park targets aerospace industry
Oct. 20, 2009 – Mississippi economic development officials have announced the creation of the GTR Global Industrial Aerospace Park in Lowndes County. The park is the linchpin of a broad regional effort to target an industry that represents 10 million U.S. jobs, officials said.
Occupying 2,500 publicly owned or controlled acres adjacent to the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, the site has well-developed insfrastructure elements, including electric and gas utilities and rail, air, highway, and water transportation.
Communities in east Mississippi and west Alabama are collaborating on development of the industrial park. TVA is a partner in the effort and will help promote the site.
"Having worked in this field for 22 years, I can safely say I have never seen a site with such attributes," said Joe Max Higgins, CEO of the Columbus-Lowndes Development Link. Go to the GTR website to view a full list of attributes and video presentation.
The park builds on an existing concentration of aerospace industries, including American Eurocopter, Stark Aerospace, and Aurora Flight Sciences. They represent a combined investment of $80 million and employ 600 workers.
